Reindeer remind us of Christmas. Santa’s sleigh is pulled by flying reindeer, and Rudolph is at the head of the sleigh with his red nose providing light for the trip around the world. We love the idea of reindeer, but what do we really know about them? Here are a few facts you may not have known about this furry, loveable and somewhat endangered animal:
- Both male and female reindeer have antlers. Unlike American deer, both the male and female reindeer grow antlers. The male antlers fall off in November, and the female antlers fall a little later in the season. Does this mean that Santa’s reindeer were females on December 24th? It’s something to ponder!
- Reindeer and Caribou are the same species. When people refer to reindeer, they are referring (most of the time) to the domesticated animal in the species. These reindeer are herded by people and pull sleds in places like Siberia and Scandinavia. Caribou are wild reindeer.
- Reindeer are FAST. Reindeer can seem like a slow breed of animal as they trot or plod along on a daily basis. However, when alarmed, they can reach speeds of up to 48 mph! It’s no wonder that Santa likes to have reindeer pull his sleigh!
- Reindeer are actually QUIET. Both males and females have the ability to vocalize and they use their voices for specific purposes. Males for mating season and females for mothering. However, for the most part, they are quiet creatures! (No wonder we never hear them on the rooftops!)
- Reindeer calves are up and walking in an hour! New reindeer calves can walk within an hour of being born! (Well, they have to learn to walk before they learn to fly, right?)
We think that reindeer are beautiful, and we are proud to be able to have live reindeer for our clients each Christmas season. We love these amazing creatures, and our reindeer owners take GREAT care of their herds. They know their personalities, their needs and their favorite foods!
